Japan received the Modern Jazz Quartet with an enthusiasm that the group reciprocated, touring there repeatedly and recording several times for the local market. Concert In Japan '66 catches the band mid-career, playing the established book - the Lewis originals, the Ellington, the blues - to an audience that listened with a concentration American club crowds rarely offered. Milt Jackson stretches out considerably more than on the studio records, and John Lewis's piano, always the most economical instrument in the group, gets room to demonstrate how much can be done with very few notes.

Japanese Atlantic double LP. Live MJQ, which is where the group loosened up.
