1985 Japanese re-issue on Verve's "Best 50" series of the 1963 live album. With insert and obi.

condition (record/cover): NM / NM

Insert and obi included.

August 1962, a Greenwich Village basement, and a working quartet doing what it did every night. Coleman Hawkins had Tommy Flanagan at the piano, Major Holley humming along with his own bowed bass lines, and Eddie Locke on drums, and the atmosphere is entirely that of a club rather than a studio: long tempos, room to stretch, an audience audible throughout. Hawkins is in ferocious form, that famous vibrato roughened by age into something closer to a growl, working through standards he had been playing for thirty years and finding new things in all of them.

Japanese Verve pressing. Live Hawkins in a small room, which is where he was always at his best.
