1958, and the man who invented the tenor saxophone as a solo instrument is fifty-four years old and playing better than ever. Coleman Hawkins had spent the decade demonstrating that he could absorb bop without abandoning anything he had built, and The High And Mighty Hawk is one of the finest results: a relaxed small-group session with Buck Clayton's trumpet as foil and a rhythm section that simply gets out of the way. The blues "Bird Of Prey Blues" runs long and Hawkins takes chorus after chorus without ever repeating an idea. Enormous tone, complete authority, no strain anywhere.

Japanese pressing of the Felsted album. One of the great late-period Hawkins records.
