Sonny Lester's idea was simple and very good: put a load of first-call New York players in a club on a Sunday, roll tape, and let them blow at length with no arrangements to get in the way. Dizzy Gillespie is the marquee name and he is in unusually loose form, Pepper Adams supplies the baritone weight, Richard Davis and Mel Lewis make a rhythm section that could carry anything, and a very young Chick Corea is sitting at the piano playing considerably more inside than he would a year later. Jam session records are usually an excuse. This one is a document.

Japanese pressing of the Solid State album. Late-sixties New York captured with the tape running and nobody trying to make a statement.
