Melusine is Aribert Reimann's opera in four acts after the drama by Yvan Goll, on a libretto by Claus H. Henneberg. This two-disc set is a live recording from the Staatstheater Nürnberg, made on 12 May 2007, with the Nürnberger Philharmoniker under Peter Hirsch.
Reimann, born in Berlin on 4 March 1936, died there on 13 March 2024. Strong, mysterious women play a central role in all of Reimann's music theatre, and Melusine may be the most poetic of them. The title role is sung by the soprano Marlene Mild. Around her are Teresa Erbe as Pythia, Gabriele May as Madame Lapérouse, Richard Kindley as Max Oleander and Song-Hu Liu as the Count of Lusignan, with Wieland Satter as the Surveyor, Dariusz Siedlik as the Mason, Sibrand Basa as the Architect and Thomas Fleischmann as the Oger. Four guests at the Count's are sung by Elisabeth Sommermann, Katrin Dieckelt, Bernardo Kim and Tim Stekkelies, and Waltraut Gerner was the répétitrice.
The mermaid Melusine, part human and part mythical creature, is an archetypal figure found in many sources, and for centuries she has inspired poetry, music and painting. In Reimann's opera she belongs at first entirely to Nature. When the natural world around her is threatened with loss, she is changed into a human being, and that change is her undoing: leaving the magic realm of water, she draws the element of fire to herself when she accepts her fate with the first human she is able to love. The score unfolds in a sequence of scenes linked by orchestral interludes, with a prelude opening the first act. The third act moves from a scene between Pythia and the Oger to a crowded scene at the Count's, and the fourth brings Melusine and the Count face to face before the final scenes.
The release belongs to Wergo's series devoted to Reimann. The first disc holds the first two acts, the second the third and fourth. Running to almost 97 minutes, the set documents a staged production in the theatre rather than a studio version.
