Giya Kancheli (1935–2019), one of the most acclaimed and beloved Georgian composers of the 20th century, created not only profound symphonic and chamber works but also brought depth and beauty to theatre and cinema across the Soviet era. His melodies are woven into the nation’s soul – carried in every Georgian’s heart, never forgotten, and cherished every time they are heard. In collaboration with the composer’s family, the label embarks on a new journey: to explore and preserve, piece by piece, both the well-known and the hidden, as yet unreleased recordings of Kancheli’s music for stage and screen.
This first double LP presents some of his earliest creations – music for Khanuma (theatre), Straw Hat (theatre), and Extraordinary Exhibition (an iconic Georgian film of its time). In addition to the music heard in the final works, this release reveals rare takes long left in silence – now brought to light for the first time. This album brings melodies that win the hearts of those who hear them for the first time and remain unforgettable to those who have carried them through the years – melodies that stir tender sentiment and fade with the warmth of a smile.
