Bakmak were a Berlin jazz-rock sextet, and Out Of The Blue, taped at Teldec's Berlin studio in March 1976, is the first of the two albums they left behind. The music is fusion in the mid-decade European manner, twin twelve-strings and electric piano laid over saxophone, closer to Weather Report than to any cosmic drift the krautrock tag implies.
What pulls collectors toward it is partly the scarcity of the Nova pressing and partly the personnel: at the keyboards sits Reinhold Heil, a few years before he surfaced in the Nina Hagen Band and Spliff and, later still, settled into film scoring. A sunlit, capable record that happens to carry a future pop architect in its ranks.
