Originally published in 1990, the book was part of Art Metropole's "...by Artists" series and includes essays written by John Cage, Christina Kubisch, Alvin Lucier, Annea Lockwood, Christian Marclay and many others, covering historical overviews, surveys of recent work, discussions of copyright and even some recipes for reproducing works of sound art. The book includes John Cage analysing the use of noise and perucssion in music, Christina Kubisch explaining how she sets up and conceptualises her sound installations, Donal McGraith discussing Cassette Culture, Kevin Concannon exploring cut and paste/collage sound techniques and the influence of Pop music on fine art, plus essays on 'Radical Radio', the art of 'Mimetic Sound' and a study on field/location recordings, plus a selection of reccommended listening at the back of the book that quite frankly is worthy of the cost of admission alone.
