Book of photographs by Jan Jedlička, taken at a Halloween party for hospital staff in a London pub that gave the series its name. 52 pages, stitch-bound, published by Andreas Züst, Zurich, 1999.

The Rose & Punchbowl is a book of photographs by the Czech-born painter and photographer Jan Jedlička, published in Zurich in 1999 by Andreas Züst. It is sold by ECM, the label for which Jedlička has made covers since 1992. The series was photographed at a Halloween party for hospital staff in a London pub, and the pub gave it its name. In a body of work built mostly on landscape, it is a series about people gathered in a room.

Jedlička was born in Prague in 1944 and studied at the city's Academy of Fine Arts from 1962 to 1968. He emigrated to Switzerland in 1969 and has lived in Zurich since then, and in Prague as well from the 1990s. Most of his work comes from the Maremma in southern Tuscany, where he has painted with pigments he makes from minerals, clay, sand and dust gathered on site. In 1993 and 1997 he received grants to travel and work in Britain, and this series belongs to that British period.

The publisher, Andreas Züst (1947-2000), was a Swiss photographer, painter, film producer, collector and patron who also published art books. In 1999 he published two Jedlička titles side by side, this book and Le Cuoche, a sequence of stills from Jedlička's film about a family restaurant in the Maremma. Both are kept in the Bibliothek Andreas Züst, the library of more than 10,000 books that Züst left and that has been open to the public since 2010. Züst also kept a photographic archive of his own, some 50,000 slides and 20,000 prints now held by the Swiss National Library. ECM's listing describes the book simply as photographs over 52 pages, and no essay is credited.

Jedlička met Manfred Eicher in the late 1980s, and his images have since appeared on records by Jan Garbarek, Tomasz Stańko and András Schiff, among others. Speaking to the Prague City Gallery magazine Qartal, he said that "ECM is a creation of Manfred Eicher's personality, his intuition." In 2021 the Prague City Gallery held the first comprehensive exhibition of his work. The series appeared there in the British section, beside the Hills and Trees cycle of 2002.
