Evan Parker, John Tilbury

Two Chapters and an Epilogue is a duo record by Evan Parker and John Tilbury, two musicians who reached free improvisation from opposite ends. Parker came from jazz, Tilbury from a classical training. In his note for the release Eddie Prévost writes that both chose to leave those given languages behind in order to work as autonomous musicians.

The session was recorded at Gateway Studios in Kingston-upon-Thames on 3 August 1998 by Steve Lowe. On the same day Tilbury and Prévost taped The Issue at Hand with the shakuhachi player Yoshikazu Iwamoto. Parker plays tenor and soprano saxophones, Tilbury piano. The two chapters run 32 and 37 minutes. Their titles read like chapter headings from an old novel: In Which the Listener Will Perceive That in Some Cases Madness Is Catching and Which Shews That There Are More Ways to Kill a Dog Than Hanging. The epilogue, under three minutes, is called Perro Semihundido, the title by which Goya's painting of the half-buried dog is known. The pair met again in public on 7 May 2001 at the Freedom of the City festival in London, a set later issued on Seventh of May 2001.
