Milford Graves

Bäbi (LP)

Label: IPS

Format: LP

Genre: Jazz

Out of stock

Very rare original edition on Graves' own IPS label of the 1977 album featuring Arthur Doyle.

condition (record/cover): NM / EX- (minimal wear and sticker removal residue)

The most extreme thing Milford Graves ever put his name to, which is a considerable claim. Bäbi puts him with two saxophonists, Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover, and lets the three of them play at maximum intensity for the entire duration with no let-up, no structure and no obvious concession to a listener. Doyle's tenor is a howl that barely resolves into pitch. Graves plays underneath and around and through it. There is a good argument that this is the furthest anyone took the language of free jazz before the term stopped meaning anything, and it remains genuinely difficult listening in the best sense.

Original IPS pressing, self-released 1977. Not for everybody. Absolutely essential for some.
