Recorded live at Yale in the late sixties and released on Milford Graves' own imprint, because no label was going to touch it. Nommo pairs Graves with Don Pullen in a duo of quite extraordinary violence and intelligence: Pullen attacking the piano with the backs of his hands in the clusters that would become his signature, Graves refusing to state a tempo for the entire duration, and the two of them generating momentum out of pure friction. The title comes from Dogon cosmology and the self-release was a deliberate act of independence, years before anyone was using the word.
Original pressing on the artists' own IPS / SRP imprint. Self-determination in practice, and one of the essential free jazz duo records.
Release notes
"SRP" on sleeve, "IPS" and "IPS Records" (Institute of Percussive Studies) on labels. This version has the same cover as the second issue, but with orange labels and the A and B side reversed on the labels. Track length for P.G. V on the label (15:00) is different from the cover (15:20). The first release on IPS was in 1974, so this is probably a later issue.
