Caravan formed in Canterbury in 1968, and their first albums with Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair and Richard Coughlan defined the Canterbury sound. Back To Front, released in July 1982 on Kingdom Records, reunited that original quartet for the last time in the studio.
The album was recorded in Herne Bay, Kent, between November 1981 and January 1982 and produced by the band. Songwriting is shared: Richard Sinclair opens with Back To Herne Bay Front and adds A. A. Man, Dave Sinclair brings Videos Of Hollywood and Sally Don't Change It, and Hastings writes most of the rest, closing with the linked Proper Job / Back To Front. Dave Sinclair plays piano, organ, Minimoog and Prophet synthesizer, and Mel Collins takes the saxophone solos.
Richard Sinclair's warm voice and melodic bass lines return here alongside Hastings' songs, a pairing absent from Caravan records since the early seventies.
