Acclaimed composer, producer, DJ, and founder of Nonclassical, Gabriel Prokofiev, unveils his long-awaited album Dark Lights, marking his first personal release on the label in over a decade. Known for his distinctive fusion of genres, Prokofiev bridges the worlds of orchestral music and electronic production with an intensity that feels uniquely his own.
Dark Lights represents a bold step forward in Prokofiev’s sonic journey. Drawing on his background as a producer of hip-hop, grime, and electro, combined with his deep roots in electroacoustic classical composition, the album blurs musical boundaries. Pulsating 808-style beats, raw analogue synths, and sweeping orchestral textures converge to create an atmosphere that is both cinematic and visceral. At the heart of the album is a collaboration with the internationally renowned FAMES European Youth Orchestra, infused with the artistry of conductor and violinist Etienne Abelin and the evocative voice of Viviana-Zarah Baudis. Together, they bring Prokofiev’s daring vision to life, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that oscillates between shadow and radiance, intimacy and grandeur.
Further expanding its scope, Dark Lights also includes inventive remixes by NWAKKE, Adhelm, and Nicholas Thayer, each reinterpreting Prokofiev’s work through their own sonic lens and pushing the material into bold new directions.
