300 copies only! De Sälla Jaktmarkerna brings together Sewer Election and Ån for a collaborative work recorded during 2024 in Kortedala, on the outskirts of Gothenburg. The album represents a meeting point between two distinct voices in the Gothenburg experimental scene. Dan Johansson (Sewer Election) has spent recent years exploring increasingly nuanced territories in synthesized sound. Here, he collaborates with Matz Engdahl (Ån), a late bloomer in the milieu around Longest Night whose acclaimed self-released cassette earlier this year announced a distinctive voice. De Sälla Jaktmarkerna marks Engdahl's first major release.
At its core, this is an album steeped in melancholic reflection. The music meanders through vulnerable and hypnotic passages, creating dreamlike abstractions that recall the introspective depths of Coil, the textural investigations of Robert Turman, or the restrained minimalism found in Aaron Dilloway's quieter moments. Yet there's something distinctly local here - a gritty Kortedala sensibility that grounds the more ethereal explorations.
Johansson's recent synth work takes unexpected turns as it intersects with Engdahl's lush organ melodies, environmental recordings, and expanded drones. While resolutely minimal in approach, simple yet evocative melodies emerge with bold presence, invoking forgotten times and places - familiar yet unknown, immediate yet distant.
The result occupies liminal spaces: between past and present, memory and immediacy, sorrow and acceptance. De Sälla Jaktmarkerna - roughly "The Blissful Hunting Grounds" - offers a sound world both intimate and expansive, rooted in suburban geography yet reaching toward something universal in its melancholic resonance.
