The Savoy sides are where bop was first properly captured on record. Between 1944 and 1948 Charlie Parker cut a body of material for Herman Lubinsky's Newark label that includes "Now's The Time", "Billie's Bounce", "Ko-Ko" and a good deal else, mostly in three-minute takes with rhythm sections of the first rank and a young Miles Davis frequently in the trumpet chair. The recording quality is what 1945 allowed. The playing rewrote the vocabulary of the music inside about eighteen months, and every alto player since has been dealing with the consequences.
