Gerald LaPierre was an influential American-born composer and academic who pioneered electronic music in South Africa. He is best known for establishing the Gerald LaPierre Electro-Acoustic Music Studio at the University of Natal (now University of KwaZulu-Natal) in 1973. He was the first composer to teach at the University of Natal, introducing formal electronic and electro-acoustic music studies to the region. Shades of Burgundy is a self-released avant-garde work featuring collage and sound art elements. LaPierre’s work is characterized by an embrace of musique concrète, extended instrumental techniques, and early synthesizer assemblages.
