Dan Gibson was a Canadian wildlife filmmaker who spent the sixties and seventies recording nature for his films and then, in 1981, began releasing the recordings themselves on his own label: Solitudes, environmental sound without music, an hour of a loon on a lake or a thunderstorm in the Rockies. He built his own parabolic microphone (the "Dan Gibson Parabolic Reflector" was sold commercially) and the results were, for the time, extraordinarily clean.

The series went on to sell millions as "relaxation" product, but the early volumes are pure field recording, closer to Chris Watson than to the later new-age industry that grew out of them. Volume Two, Canadian pressing, original sleeve.
