Eight electronic works by Ludger Brümmer on two CDs, made with granular synthesis and the physical-modelling software GENESIS and produced for up to 42 channels; a ZKM Karlsruhe production in Edition ZKM, 2022.

Spheres of Resonance is a double album of central works by Ludger Brümmer, one of the leading composers of electronic music in Germany. Across eight pieces and more than two and a half hours, it shows the two methods at the core of his work, granular synthesis and physical modelling, both driven by algorithms of his own. All tracks were produced with up to 42 channels for playback in a surround environment.

Brümmer was born in Werne in 1958. He was a guest artist at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe from 1993, headed its Institute for Music and Acoustics from 2003 and later its Hertz-Lab, and created important innovations for sound generation there; his fields are physical modelling, algorithmic composition and spatial audio, and he initiated the Sound Dome project. He has received the Golden Nica of Ars Electronica, two Pierre d'Or at the Bourges competition and the Busoni Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts, of which he is a member. The album came out of the EASTN-DC project, funded by the Creative Europe programme, as a production of the ZKM; mastering is by Benjamin Miller.

Gesualdo, Carlo, Glasharfe and Falling were made with granular synthesis, a micro-compositional method that cuts sound into small particles and reassembles it, comparable to the technique of the pointillist painters. Cellularium, Spheres of Resonance, Lizard Point and Gestalt use the simulation software GENESIS, which imitates the material and vibration properties of real objects with great realism and lets the slowed course of a vibration be followed in detail. Most pieces run between eighteen and twenty-seven minutes; Gestalt, at five, is the exception. In many of them historical material is the starting point, an attempt to build a new language on old foundations.

The album was placed on the quarterly list of the German Record Critics' Award (4/2022, electronic and experimental) and nominated for its 2023 annual award. The jury spoke of sound spaces of hypnotic quality and called the album "Fascinatingly perfect and beautiful." A companion double album, Sonic Patterns, was announced by Wergo for the end of 2022.

2CD, Wergo WER 2077 2, Edition ZKM, released in 2022.
