The ten symphonies of Hans Werner Henze (1947-2000), including the choral Ninth after Anna Seghers, played by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Rundfunkchor Berlin under Marek Janowski, recorded 2008-2014; first box of Wergo's Henze centenary Edition.

Sinfonia is the first box of the Hans Werner Henze Edition, which Wergo publishes for the centenary of the composer's birth on 1 July 1926. It holds all ten symphonies, written over almost fifty years, from the First of 1947 to the Tenth, completed at the turn of the millennium. They are played by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under Marek Janowski, the only complete recorded cycle of Henze's symphonies.

Janowski recorded the ten symphonies with the Berlin radio orchestra between 2008 and 2014, and the cycle first appeared as a Wergo box in 2014. In the choral Ninth the orchestra is joined by the Rundfunkchor Berlin, prepared by Michael Gläser. Henze himself had conducted the first six for Deutsche Grammophon. The Edition will run to five boxes in 2026, with orchestral works and concertos, chamber and piano music, and vocal music to follow. The final box of stage works includes a previously unreleased recording of Der Prinz von Homburg.

The literary and political references range from ancient mythology to the Cuban Revolution. The Third (1950) has three movements titled "Anrufung Apolls", "Dithyrambe" and "Beschwörungstanz" (invocation of Apollo, dithyramb, conjuring dance). The Fourth (1955) is a single movement of about twenty minutes, and the Sixth for two orchestras (1969, revised 1994) was dedicated by Henze to modern Cuba. The Ninth (1997), the longest, is a choral symphony in seven movements on words by Hans-Ulrich Treichel after Anna Seghers' novel Das siebte Kreuz (The Seventh Cross). It is dedicated to the heroes and martyrs of German antifascism. The Tenth has four movements called a storm, a hymn, a dance and a dream.

From work to work one can follow Henze's path as a composer up to the late works. Reviewing this set, the site 5against4 called the cycle "a powerful, exhilarating reminder of the importance and ingenuity of his thoroughly unique music", while finding the Tenth the weaker performance. The Edition gathers almost all of Henze's recordings on Wergo, some of them made under his supervision and some long unavailable. It does not claim to be complete. Henze died in 2012.

5CD box with 60-page booklet, Wergo WER 6961 2, released in 2026 as volume 1 of the Hans Werner Henze Edition, with the support of the Strecker-Stiftung and the Hans Werner Henze-Stiftung (297'12"). Reissue of the 2014 Wergo box WER 6959 2.
