The Swiss flautist Aurèle Nicolet in a programme of postwar flute music from Europe and Japan. Pierre Boulez's Sonatine for flute and piano, from 1946, packs early serial writing into a single violent movement, and Luciano Berio's Sequenza I (1958), the first of his solo series, makes the flute sound like several overlapping voices.
The Japanese side is represented by Yoritsune Matsudaira's Somaksha (1961) and Kazuo Fukushima's Mei (1962), whose breathy attacks and bent pitches come from the shakuhachi. Jürg Wyttenbach is at the piano in the Boulez and in his own Paraphrase (1968). Japanese edition on Trio Records, with insert.
