The London label Soul Jazz has done as much as anyone to reframe krautrock for a new century, and Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2 (2013) is the second instalment of its survey, gathering West German rock and electronic music from 1971 to 1983. The vinyl came as two separate double albums, of which this is the first. It runs from the motorik and kosmische pioneers (Can, Neu!, Cluster, Amon Düül II, Michael Rother) to the second wave that bent the tradition toward new wave and minimal synth (DAF, Asmus Tietchens), with a good deal of the obscure (Agitation Free, Bröselmaschine) in between.
A well-chosen entry point, handsomely packaged. The Soul Jazz pressing.
