Iannis Xenakis wrote Psappha in 1975 for Sylvio Gualda, his first work for solo percussion, its title an archaic spelling of the name of the poet Sappho. The score fixes rhythms on a grid of pulses but leaves much of the choice of skins, woods and metals to the performer, and the music unfolds as hard, irregular accents that thicken into superimposed layers.
This version is played by William Winant, the Californian percussionist, and is split across the two sides of a 7-inch with untitled labels. An unofficial release from Mexico, issued in 1995 by Dolor Del Estamago in 200 copies.
