The Soirée Vian, a kind of meta-cabaret created in 1991 based on a commission by the WDR, develops along the narrative red thread of Boris Vian's novel The red grass and turns into a dizzying journey through the absurdly crazy worlds of Vian's universe. The fullness and polystylism of this venture undertaken by Denys Bouliane might indeed almost make the listener dizzy, not least due to the fantastic performance by the electro-acoustic ensemble "Série B." Their "musical roller coaster ride from simple tones to hyper virtuoso polyrhythmics, from bel canto to high-tech bruitism, from mechanistic ensemble precision to improvisational anarchy, corresponds perfectly with Vian's exuberant verbal imagination, which combines nursery rhymes with philosophical speculation, laconic thriller lingo with absurd wordplay." (Peter Niklas Wilson) The Soirée Vian has five parts and tells a kind of coherent, absurd story, to which ever and again extra elements of persiflage and counterpoint are added. Denys Bouliane's creation is not only a very special listening experience but also an extremely comical intellectual amusement.
