1975, and Don Cherry makes the record that predicts roughly the next forty years of everything. Brown Rice pours Indian tambura drones, North African percussion, electric bass, whispered vocals and a heavily processed trumpet into four long tracks that belong to no genre that existed at the time. Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are here from the old Ornette band, Frank Lowe tears through the title track on tenor, and the whole thing floats on a groove so relaxed it barely registers as funk until you notice you have been moving for ten minutes. Sampled, borrowed and imitated ever since.
