A special discounted bundle gathering Marion Brown's two finest reissues of the season. Three For Shepp (Elemental Music, 1966), the Georgia-born saxophonist's Impulse! debut and a cornerstone document of the late-60s New York avant-garde - recorded with an all-star band of Dave Burrell, Stanley Cowell, Grachan Moncur III, Sirone, Beaver Harris, and Bobby Capp, splitting its program between Brown originals and Archie Shepp compositions in a conscious echo of Shepp's own 1964 homage to Coltrane, Four For Trane.
Awofofora (Aguirre Records, 1976), reissued for the first time ever - a long-obscured Japan-only Discomate session where funk, reggae, and Afro-Caribbean rhythm become the architecture for Brown's golden-toned alto improvisations. Limited edition of 1,000, gatefold sleeve, with new liner notes by Ed Hazell.
Two essential records, separated by a decade and an ocean, capturing the full breadth of one of the most quietly radical voices in postwar jazz.
