The Penguin Guide called it the straightest jazz album Sanders had made for years, and heard what he was after: a hypnotic groove that lets the horn float almost at will. Steve Loewy at AllMusic writes that the results may have disappointed some fans at the time, but that Sanders had reinvented himself as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful, pensive playing. AllMusic's note on the Timeless compilation goes further and calls it one of his most understated, most misunderstood and most moving records.

Sanders sings on the title track, in a manner that recalls The Creator Has a Master Plan without going as far out. Horace Silver's Moon Rays follows. Abdullah Ibrahim's Moniebah is the ballad. Fifty-two minutes. It is the middle of the three Timeless albums, between Africa and the ballads set Welcome to Love.
