A Philips survey of Persian classical and regional music with an unusual emphasis on the drum: the tombak, the goblet drum whose technique, all fingers and rolls and snaps, makes tabla players nervous. The record pairs solo tombak displays with santur, tar and ney, and with vocal pieces in the radif tradition, the sequence of modes that is the basis of Persian art music.
Philips's Iranian releases of the sixties and seventies predate the revolution and document a Tehran musical life that was later driven underground or into exile. Dutch pressing, 831 series.
Release notes
The drum tracks (A2, B1 and B2) are "Gymnastic rhythms". B1 and B2 recorded in the gymnasium Varzischa Djafari in Tehran. Made in Holland.
