Theory Of Obscurity tells the story of the iconic renegade cult band The Residents. From the group's formation in Shreveport to their success in the burgeoning San Francisco avant-garde music scene of the 60s and 70s, The Residents redefined what a rock band could be. A story that spans 40 years and is clouded in mystery. Many details surrounding the group are secret, including the identities of its members. Our film takes viewers inside this incredibly private group with unprecedented access to their archives and their recent 40th anniversary tour. The Residents have released more than 60 albums, performed all over the world and inspired many people to be weird, take chances and find their own voice. Now, our film will introduce The Residents to a whole new generation.

The Residents are probably the most famous anonymous rock stars in history, going from an underground San Francisco band to darlings of the music video era. Always masked, they usually perform and appear wearing tuxedos with top hats and large eyeballs for heads. By keeping their identities obscure, they’ve been able to focus on their music, create an air of mystery, and follow their unpredictable and delightfully bizarre muses. This absorbing documentary doesn’t lift the veil on the masked members’ identities, but it does provide the most comprehensive look at the band yet, including interviews with some of its ardent fans: The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, magician Penn Jillette, artist Gary Panter, MoMA curator Barbara London, and such musicians as Jerry Harrison (the Talking Heads) and Les Claypool (Primus)
