Behind the name Beppe Starnazza e i Vortici lies the post-Skiantos improvisational musical project of Roberto "Freak" Antoni. They were launched by the television show Mr. Fantasy, hosted by Carlo Massarini, in which Freak posed as the nephew of Pippo Starnazza, a comedian in the 1940s and later a well-known actor. The group, led by the histrionic singer and featuring Lele Marchitelli on bass, Serena Dandini's partner and the composer of the music for all her historic programs, through a remarkable restoration project reinterprets, in a swing-rock vein, the most famous Italian tunes of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, from the great Rodolfo De Angelis to the "usual" Fred Buscaglione, including Il Trio Lescano and Natalino Otto. The relaxed atmosphere of the project is palpable and in no way detracts from the absolutely splendid and entertaining album; precisely because of its lightness and brevity (what a shame!) it is not difficult to find yourself listening to it two or three times in a row, humming the well-known tunes and instinctively tapping your foot.
