The five movements of Dance, the 1979 three-way collaboration between Glass, the choreographer Lucinda Childs and the artist Sol LeWitt, who provided a black-and-white film projection that ran behind the dancers for several of the five sections. World premiere at the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam on 19 October 1979; New York premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on 29 November 1979.
The 1988 release brings together recordings made over nearly a decade. Dances 1 and 3 were taped in 1979 at Greene Street Studios in New York and digitally remixed in 1986. Dances 2 and 4 were recorded and mixed in 1985 at The Living Room. Dance 5 was recorded in 1984 at Greene Street. Glass scored Dance for the Philip Glass Ensemble rather than full orchestra; the LP preserves that smaller-scale scoring.
