1962, and after fifteen years on independent labels Thelonious Monk signed to Columbia and got the promotional machinery of a major behind him for the first time. Monk's Dream was the result and it became the best-selling record of his life, which says nothing bad about it: the quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums had been working the material for years and plays it with total assurance. Rouse understood these tunes better than anyone who ever occupied the chair. Monk himself sounds relaxed, funny and entirely uninterested in modifying anything for the new audience.

CBS pressing. The most accessible entry point to Monk, and a great record on its own terms.
