On their second album, the Slits leave punk behind for good and indulge in their most lasciviously nutty tendencies. If you thought Cut was too weird for your taste, you definitely won’t like Return of the Giant Slits, but it will be your loss. With help from master improviser Steve Beresford and an excellent production job by the band with Dick O’Dell, helped by the great Dennis Bovell on most tracks, they play some kind of dubby African tribal music affiliated to no ethnic tradition in particular, celebrating London’s cultural melting-pot. You definitely need to be in the right mood to enjoy the girls’ lunatic vocalisations, but when you are this LP is a treat.
