Six of the seven tracks here had already appeared in 1968, on the quartet album Harold McNair made for RCA with Bill Le Sage on piano, Spike Heatley on bass and Tony Carr on drums. The seventh, Spacecraft, was recorded live in London in 1970 "with friends" and had never been issued. B & C put the set together in 1972, a year after McNair died of lung cancer at thirty-nine.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1931, McNair toured Europe with Quincy Jones before settling in London, where he became a regular at Ronnie Scott's. He also played the flute riff on Donovan (!)'s There Is A Mountain, and the album includes a Donovan song, Lord Of The Reedy River, next to his own soul jazz and post-bop pieces Mento, The Hipster and The Cottage. He plays flute and tenor saxophone throughout.
