Put the needle on the side credited to AMM and what comes out is Merzbow: the labels and the insert of this FatCat twelve-inch swap the two artists, so Tower Of Ghost, Masami Akita's twelve-minute noise piece, plays from the side that names the English group. The record was the fourth instalment of FatCat's Split Series, issued in 1999, a run that put two acts on each disc.
For Ute, on the other side, lasts more than twenty minutes. In those years AMM was the trio of Eddie Prévost on percussion, Keith Rowe on tabletop guitar and John Tilbury on piano, and their free improvisation was built from sustained tones, scraped strings and long stretches of near silence. Few pairings in the series asked a listener to adjust the volume knob quite so often.
