Aynsley Dunbar recorded this album at Marquee Studios in London in March and April 1970, and by the time it was released he was drumming for Frank Zappa. It is an odd fit for BYG, a label known for the Paris free jazz of its Actuel series: Blue Whale plays heavy blues-rock with horns, run from the drum kit, with Dunbar also co-producing.
The band had two guitarists, Roger Sutton and Ivan Zagni, plus Tommy Eyre on organ and piano, Peter Friedberg on bass, Paul Williams on vocals, and a horn line of Charles Greetham on saxophone and Edward Reay-Smith on trombone. Most of side one goes to a sixteen-and-a-half-minute Willie The Pimp, the Zappa tune from Hot Rats; Williams wrote the other four pieces.
