John Cage wrote his String Quartet in Four Parts between 1949 and 1950, using a fixed set of chords and avoiding vibrato, so the instruments sound thin and pure, almost like a consort of viols. The four movements follow the seasons, from the gentle flow of the first to the near stillness of the third.
Witold Lutosławski's String Quartet of 1964 lets each player move freely within written sections, coordinated by cues instead of a common beat. The LaSalle Quartet, who gave its first performance in Stockholm in 1965, plays both works. Issued by Orbis in Germany in 1976, with notes by Monika Lichtenfeld.
