John Cage composed the thirty-two Etudes Australes in 1974 and 1975 for Grete Sultan, tracing the notes from star charts of the southern sky and treating the two hands as independent, each on its own half of the keyboard. The result is a sparse, pointillist music of very wide leaps, almost impossible to play.
Bruno Canino plays the first book, studies 1 to 8, two per side across four sides. Issued on the small Italian label I Dischi Dell'Ippopotamo in a gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Maurizio Porro, and never reissued.
