The third part of John Cage's Empty Words reduces Thoreau's Journal to isolated words, syllables and letters, read slowly with long silences between them, so that language turns into pure sound. On 2 December 1977 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, Cage performed it before an audience of thousands who whistled, shouted, chanted and climbed onto the stage, while he kept reading for over two hours.
The whole evening, audience included, is on these two discs, first issued by Cramps. This Ampersand reissue comes in a slipcase with a booklet containing the text, artwork and notes by Cage and Allen S. Weiss, plus photographs by Roberto Masotti and Giovanni Giovannetti.
