Empty Words is built from Henry David Thoreau's Journal, taken apart by chance operations until, in the third part, only syllables, letters and sounds remain. On 2 December 1977 John Cage read it at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, seated at a table in near darkness, with projections by Walter Marchetti, and the packed hall soon turned against him with shouting, whistling and people climbing onto the stage.
Cage went on reading for about two and a half hours, and the recording keeps the whole evening, his quiet voice slowly swallowed and then resurfacing from the uproar. Issued by Cramps in 1990 on two CDs, art direction by Gianni Sassi, with a 73-page booklet in Italian, French and English.
