Two of the most vital and urgent releases from Otoroku's remarkable 2025 output, available together at a special price.
[Ahmed] أحمد - "[Sama'a] (Audition)" (2LP) The quartet of Pat Thomas, Joel Grip, Antonin Gerbal, and Seymour Wright returns to Otoroku with their first ever studio recording. Tackling the material of Ahmed Abdul-Malik's legendary 1958 debut 'Jazz Sahara' as points of departure for their singular brand of group improvisation, '[Sama'a] (Audition)' was recorded at London's Fish Factory studios in single takes. Raw, energetic, and brilliant at every turn, the four sides are marked by a distinct sense of abstraction and spaciousness while retaining the strong sense of lyricism and groove that makes the band so special. Issued as a beautifully produced 2LP in gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Fred Moten, this is easily among the most important gestures of contemporary free jazz of 2025.
Sophie Agnel - "Learning" (LP) The first solo vinyl release by the French pianist, capturing her live at Cafe Oto across two dates in 2023 and 2024. A blistering tour-de-force, Agnel unlocks her instrument's multidimensional possibilities via rigorous deployments of structure, tonality, timbre, and textures, playing its body, strings, and keys with equal force - augmented by harmonica interventions and other external sound sources. Shattering the lines between free-improvisation and contemporary chamber music with a language entirely her own, 'Learning' is a monumental statement from one of the most striking improvisers working today. Issued in a highly limited edition of 300 copies.
