A cornerstone of the early Nordic ECM sound: Jan Garbarek's keening saxophone over shifting, atmospheric backdrops, with John Taylor, Bill Connors and Jack DeJohnette. Glacial, majestic, carved from northern light.

Jan Garbarek's Places is a defining document of the early Nordic ECM sound and a key chapter in the saxophonist's development of his unmistakable voice. Recorded in 1977, the album surrounds Garbarek with an exceptional band: John Taylor on organ and piano, the American guitarist Bill Connors, and the great Jack DeJohnette on drums. Across its long, patiently unfolding pieces, Garbarek stretches keening, vocal saxophone lines over shifting backdrops that move between atmospheric drift and surging intensity. Taylor's organ adds a luminous, almost sacred glow, Connors contributes both delicate texture and moments of rock-edged fire, and DeJohnette propels everything with his characteristic blend of power and sensitivity. The music feels carved from northern light and open space, glacial and majestic, yet never cold; there is a deep romanticism running beneath its austere surfaces. This is the period in which Garbarek was forging the icy, singing tone and wide-open phrasing that would influence a generation of European players, and Places captures that voice in full flight.

Spacious, dramatic and beautifully recorded, it stands as an essential early statement from one of ECM's signature artists, and a vivid illustration of how the label's distinctive aesthetic was taking shape in the 1970s. It belongs alongside Afric Pepperbird and Dis as one of the cornerstones of Garbarek's early ECM catalogue. Reissued on vinyl, its expansive, dramatic soundscapes regain the depth and presence of the original pressings, a treat for collectors and newcomers exploring the roots of the Nordic sound.
