Alvin Lucier conceived Vespers in 1969 after coming across the Sondol, a hand-held echolocation device that emits short, sharp clicks at variable speeds. Blindfolded performers move through the hall guided only by the returning echoes, so the sound becomes a map of the room, in what Lucier called sound photographs. It first appeared in 1972 on the only LP of the Sonic Arts Union.
Chambers (1968) is its smaller, wittier counterpart: radios, tape recorders and electric toys are hidden in bags, shoes, kettles and suitcases, each object filtering what it contains. First vinyl edition of both pieces, 300 copies on dark blue vinyl, with notes by Bradford Bailey and Gaia Martino and photographs by Mary Lucier.
