Siegfried Palm was the cellist for whom much of the postwar repertoire was written. György Ligeti's Concerto (1966) begins at the edge of audibility and ends in a whispered cadenza, Krzysztof Penderecki's Sonata for cello and orchestra (1964) is all clusters and extended techniques, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann's solo Sonata (1960) was also composed for Palm.
Michael Gielen conducts the Ligeti with the Sinfonie-Orchester des Hessischen Rundfunks, Andrzej Markowski the Penderecki with the Poznań Philharmonic. With Aloys Kontarsky Palm plays Anton Webern's Drei kleine Stücke op. 11, and alone Paul Hindemith's op. 25 no. 3. First issued in 1969, this is the late 1970s reissue in Wergo's Große Interpreten neuer Musik series.
