Donaueschingen, 21 October 1967. Archie Shepp with Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur III on trombones, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Beaver Harris on drums. One piece, One for the Trane, forty-three minutes, three months after Coltrane's death, opening with a seven-minute Garrison solo and ending in The Shadow of Your Smile.

Coltrane had died in July. On 21 October 1967, at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, in a Südwestfunk session, Archie Shepp played one piece for forty-three and a half minutes and called it One for the Trane. Two trombones, Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur III; Jimmy Garrison, Coltrane's bassist, opens with a seven-minute solo; Beaver Harris on drums. SABA released it that year with the title misprinted as Life at the Donaueschingen Music Festival, and the misprint has stuck to most pressings since.

AllMusic calls it avant-garde jazz at its peak and Shepp at his finest, and notes the surprise near the end when the band drops into a spaced-out The Shadow of Your Smile. MPS's own note points out that Rudd is the tailgating Dixieland trombone and Moncur the mellower one, and describes Shepp's sound as Ben Webster, bar-walking R&B tenor and the 1960s avant-garde in a single voice. A RYM reviewer counts the two minutes of audience demanding an encore at the end and says you cannot blame them.

Japanese CD edition from Solid's MPS series, mini-LP replica with obi.
