A five-record overview of György Ligeti, from the First String Quartet of 1953-54 to San Francisco Polyphony of 1973-74. The orchestral works of the 1960s, Atmosphères and Lontano under Ernest Bour, sit beside the electronic Artikulation and Glissandi from Cologne, the organ Volumina with Karl-Erik Welin and the harpsichord Continuum by Antoinette Vischer.
The Arditti Quartet plays both quartets, Michael Gielen conducts the Requiem and the Cello Concerto with Siegfried Palm, and Bruno Maderna leads Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures. This is the Wergo reissue of the box with a 32-page booklet, collecting recordings previously issued separately on the label.
